synopsis
'While trying on an old sackcloth skirt that once belonged to a
Frenchwoman, I realised her life story was written into the torn
and mended rough fabric. Years of toil and thrift were evident,
recorded like a photograph. I set about rescuing her story, trying
to translate the language of the skirt. I began with a French Dictionary
... and ended up in a sea of words.' HM
